ELECTRIC HURRICANE: YPF Art Show and Artist Book Launch

The YPF, a Montreal based art collective, will be launching their new artist book at the General 54 (54 St. Viateur Street West, Montreal, QC) on Thursday March 13th, 2008 starting at 7PM. To commemorate the launch of the book, the YPF will be exhibiting a new series of works entitled "Electric Hurricane".

Beverages and snacks will be offered along side the rockin' musical workings of YPF DJ's. Show will run from March 11th until April 20th. More information follows.

YPF ARTIST BOOK III

This will be the YPF's third, multi-edition, hand-made artist book. It is a 150 edition publication, featuring the unique contributions including silkscreen prints, hand drawings, wood cuts, photographs and lovely tidbits. Each book contains original work from each of the individual artists of the YPF. Contributing YPF artists include James Braithwate, Emily Birnbaum, Dessa Harhay, Aaron McConomy, Jen Storey, James Kerr, Amy Wong, Krissy Longtin, Neil Doshi, Milena Rogilic, Tyson Bodnarchuk, Freddy Casia, Adam Gorley, and Danijela Pruginic. This year we have invited super-special guest artists Amber Albrecht and Shawn Keruneru to participate.

Previous YPF artist book have been featured at places such as Printed Matter (Toronto, ON), The Drake Hotel (Toronto, ON), Local 23 (Montreal, QC), Headquarters Gallery (Montreal, QC).

ELECTRIC HURRICANE

The art works in this show exemplify the collaborative efforts of the YPF. Despite the fact that we are all artists existing in different parts of the world, we come together to produce a series of 2'x2' wooden canvases all layered with different artists' contributions. A canvas starts as a raw wood surface, to which the first artist will apply some form of creative treatment. The work, however, is not yet done. It is then passed to another artist to add another layer of creative projection inspired by, and incorporating the last. The canvases are passed around until they are deemed completed. Every canvas is photographed at each stage of production, in order to illustrate the contributions of each artist, and the process towards the final products. Thusly, the ultimate artwork is viewed, not only as a piece in itself, but with the history of it's making, and the chronology of it's makers.

THE YPF

Founded in September 2003, the YPF are 15 determined artists who have learned that they can get a lot more accomplished in a group than alone and have therefore taken it upon themselves to create a forum where they can explore and develop their respective metiers while enjoying the support and encouragement provided by a creative community. Moreover, they are able to take advantage of one anotherʼs strengths, learn from one anotherʼs diverse skills and interests, and perhaps most importantly, they can effectively organize and promote themselves and their work.

Based in Montreal, where they have been prolific during their life as a collective, showing locally and abroad in places such as The Drake Hotel (Toronto, ON), All Tomorrow's Parties (Long Beach, CA), Jeff Electric Gallery (Silver Lake, CA), The Open Gallery (Long Beach, CA), The Glass House (Pomona, CA), Osheaga Festival at Parc Jean Drapeau (Montreal, QC), Centre Fractal in association with Muse d'art contemporain de Montréal (Montreal, QC), and Studio Jenia of the Belgo Building (Montreal, QC).

To the Oscars... And step on it!

Well indeed as depicted in the accompanying image, a flaccid victory for our very own James Braithwaite --half of the brain power behind Pony of Prey.

You might have heard of an animated short called "I Met The Walrus", in which a young Jerry Levitan sneaks an interview with John Lennon while visiting Toronto in 1969. Well the recording was unearthed and brought to the table of a one Mr. Josh Raskin. The project entailed a visual treatment to this audio recording, and so young Josh got to work assembling his dream team of co-conspirators. Alex Kurina was in charge of the vector graphics and our own sweet prince James Braithwaite skillfully navigated the frame by frame illustrations, while Josh took the seat as the director and lead animator.

Now what's the big hubbub about this animated short? Well the people over at the Academy Awards would probably say something like "If your eye's had an appetite, you'd be crying gravy after viewing this stunningly symbolic visual representation of that interview recorded with John Lennon in 1969." In fact they most likely said something to that effect because "I Met The Walrus" is officially nominated for an Academy award!

Please allow yourself to view this as soon as you have a chance, I promise you will be shocked and awed by the axis of emotion that this animated short will bring.

The Academy Awards for 2007 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2008, but I'm sure I don't need to tell you that.

AND SO THEN THERE WAS LIGHT

Visual perception of our physical world is indeed dependent on the existence of light. Wavelengths of light tickling the rods and cones in the eye much like a feather on the rear haunches of the African white rhino, "The Pony's Republique of Peoples" is testing new perception altering technology. Beaming down a new existence from the floating island above Mt. Susan is just one more way that the inhabiants of lower earth will be pacified. Did you really see aunt Rhonda this morning wearing griddle cake breast plates? Did you really catch a glimpse of El Chupacabra trimming his moustache with whale bone shears under the sink? Beware, for reality as you know it will never be the same, that is because reality now belongs to the Almighty Caesar Pony.

So go enjoy the "Light Show" at Headquarters this weekend, take a look at the beautiful art not only by Pony of Prey but from other talented -maybe fictional- artists. Gaze upon the light that so generously provides you with the oportunity of yet another dimensional perspective, but always question if what you are seeing actually exists, or is it just another manipulation of the Almighty Caesar Pony?

Speaking of changes, you might have noticed something different this New Years. Well what can only be defined as waves of adrogyny was actually an evolutionary milestone in the human existence. As the plan of the Almighty Caesar Pony unfolds you will be experiencing hyper-kinetic moments of awareness which can only be attributed to the growing understanding of Caesar Pony, his constituents, and the our purpose.

Hold on tight for the ride is about to commence (barf bags not included). The more you understand about the Pony's Republique of Peoples the more we gain control over the collective human awareness (which is actually a device cleverly constructed using popsicle sticks & mac-tac). As you were toasting-in the New Year we tapped into the your individual resolutions and created a single unfied resolution which goes a little like this.

"I resolve, to henceforth dedicate all my energy into praising the Almighty Caesar Pony and all his glory. Under one Global Nation, the birthplace and landing pad of civilization as we know it
'The Pony's Republique of Peoples,' and henceforth submit to all demands of the Almighty Caesar Pony. Also I resolve to the enhancement and evolution of the Ambrosia salad within deep understanding of the importance of the combination of maraschino cherries, marshmallows & creamy dairy products and commit myself into the constant creation of said recipe for the strict consumption by the Almighty Caesar Pony. METAPHOR FOR LIFE, AND BY LIFE I MEAN DEATH... THE DEATH OF LOWER EARTH.

Portrayed here in this poster campaign that you might have seen on the streets of Montréal is a metaphorical depiction of the unevitable demise of Lower Earth. Lower Earthlings fairly represented by googly-eyed egg-people with cold soars, being inondated by their own doings. This making my job, which is to serve the best interests of the Almighty Caesar Pony a very easy one. That job being to enslave the inhabitants of Lower Earth to toil away in our underground mines, and as mentioned before, we do offer health benefits and an attractive incentive program, but we do not pay time-and-a-half for all holidays, and joining our “fun little gang” is not optional.

LOWLY INHABITANTS OF LOWER EARTH:

You may have noticed a few changes to your planet in the last few days, and I would like to put your little minds to rest about a few things.

First of all, yes, the entire East Coast was destroyed in a devastating condor attack, and yes we were partially responsible for this little misunderstanding. Secondly, yes, the population of Europe is currently being enslaved with a powerfully interesting hypnotic device, and, yes, you will be used to toil away in our underground mines, and, yes, we do offer health benefits and an attractive incentive program. Thirdly, no, we do not pay time-and-a-half for all holidays, and joining our “fun little gang” is not optional.

But, to make this transition easier, I thought you might want to know a little bit about your new benevolent masters, and how we managed to live on a floating continent above the Earth without anyone being the wiser. Firstly, the floating mass of awesomeness that now controls your destiny, is called the The Pony’s Republique of Peoples, and it is controlled by an all-seeing rodent named Caesar Pony. There are several ethnic groups, constantly making snitty comments at each other, but they are all under the handsome thumb of one leader, the Mighty Caesar Pony (praise be to him.) The Pony’s Republique of Peoples has been floating above the earth since the beginning of recorded time, but thanks to a carefully orchestrated campaign by the Freemasons, they have managed to go unnoticed. . .UNTIL NOW.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and a whole planet wasn’t enslaved in a long-weekend. So, lowly ones, that means this whole enslavement thing might take a little while. So, in the meantime, Caesar Pony, and the four greatest commanders of The Pony’s Republique of Peoples will be posting suggestions and useful recipes to make this transition into serfdom as painless as possible.
